The Business Value of Open Source on IBM i - This executive level presentation discusses how and why IBM i shops should be looking at Open Source solutions in general.  Open Source software has come a long way and is an integral part of every data center.  In this session we explore how open source is implemented on IBM i and why is makes a tremendous complement to the heritage systems of record in many IBM i organizations.  

Learning Objectives:

1) Review the evolution of Open Source software and a little about where it’s going.

2) Explore the role of Open Source in the development environment and DevOps.

3) Review the ROI discussion around adding Open Source to the development skillset.

Python and Data AccessDatabase access is at the center of any programming languages usefulness and Python can access several different databases including Db2 for IBM i.  In this presentation we will explore some different database options and dig deep on Db2 data access with practical examples of how to structure a script and plenty of solid use cases.   

Learning Objectives:

1) Learn how to install Db2 ODBC connector and use in Python

2) Explore the world of SQLite on IBM i

3) Review the world of Postgress on IBM i

4) Explore some examples of how to use Python to access data

Mike Pavlak has been working with IBM midrange solutions since 1992 and IBM Mainframes before that. After years of developing applications using RPG, CL and PHP he managed IT development and IT for power protection manufacturer Tripp Lite. Later Mike was instrumental in developing the adoption of PHP as a primary solution for web development on IBM i working with Zend Technologies. Today, as a Solutions Architect at Zend by Perforce, Mike helps companies around the world approach the challenges of modernization and open source technologies. In addition to several roles as a volunteer with COMMON the premier IBM midrange user group, Mike also teaches PHP & Python classes part time at Moraine Valley Community College in Suburban Chicago.
